GUIDED TOUR OF THE KAZIMIERZ DISTRICT

By | Bez kategorii

The District of Kazimierz is the historical Jewish part of Kraków. Its narrow streets, hidden courtyards and irregular squares are full of interesting and unique Jewish architecture. Founded in 1335 by King Kazimierz the Great, this district used to be a separate town altogether. With time, it became part of Kraków as the city grew larger and larger.

During this tour, you will see the former Jewish district of Kraków, these days known as a vibrant artistic centre filled with designer cafés, trendy pubs as well as little shops selling antiques and all things handmade and bohemian. The atmosphere of authentic passion is all around. This fashionable area is surrounded by historical tenements in which Jewish life flourished before World War II, and which later witnessed atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis during the Holocaust. The Kazimierz was also the film set for Steven Spielberg’s memorable 1993 film, Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler will continue to be the patron of the tour, as you leave the Kazimierz and cross the river to see the other district: Podgórze. It is here that you will have an opportunity to visit the museum in Schindler’s old factory and see the remains of the former ghetto wall.
